Now, chances are you don’t need the vents or delivery system replaced (unless you live in an extremely old house). Usually, all that needs to be replaced within the HVAC system are the heating and cooling elements.
But just how often should it be replaced? Here’s everything you need to know about your furnace, AC, and other appliances.
On average, an air conditioner should be replaced every 10 years or so. Now, if you have it properly inspected and maintained on a yearly basis, chances are you’ll be able to extend the life of the AC to 15 years, although there are always a number of variables at play. Basically, whenever you hit the 10-year mark you need to start saving some money for an AC replacement.
The good thing is that within the 10 years since you last purchased the AC (or since it was installed if you moved into your house after it was already purchased) there have been a number of technological advancements to the entire HVAC system, which will not only speed up the delivery of treated air, but improve the energy efficiency as well.
Your furnace is likely to remain online a bit longer than the AC. Most maintained furnaces will last you a good 18 to 20 years, although again this does depend on a few variables. When the time to replace the furnace comes, you’ll cut down on your energy consumption with a brand new device.
If you use a heat pump inside your property, you’ll probably need to have it changed every 15 years or so, although it isn’t unheard of for a heat pump to last far longer. By taking proper care of your appliances, you’ll greatly extend the usable years of everything.
