Learn Your Plumbing Basics

Plumbing Basics

Plumbing Basics

There are two separate subsystems when it comes to your home’s plumbing. These two systems are the intake system that brings fresh water into your house and the outtake system that brings water out. These are two important pieces to know about when it comes to plumbing basics.

Your Plumbing

Intake System – The intake system measures the amount of water coming into your home which is then metered and this is how your city or county decides how much to charge you for your water usage.

Knowing where your water shutoff is, is important. If an emergency occurs such as a burst pipe you need to get to the main shutoff quickly to ensure that damage doesn’t occur.

When it comes to hot water the pipes carry the freshwater supply straight to your water heater. The hot water line that comes from your water heater then carries this hot water to your home’s faucets.

Outtake System – The outtake system has an important job of taking the wastewater out of your home. The drainage system in your home it pitched or angled so that the water just runs down and out.

Vents, traps, and clean outs help your outtake system work correctly.

  • Vents – Help air get in to make sure the water flows correctly.
  • Traps – Traps are important as they help prevent sewer gas from backing up and entering your home.
  • Clean Outs – Clean out plugs give you easy access to the traps so they can be cleaned out when blocked.

Fixing Your Plumbing System

Although it seems there are only two parts to your home’s plumbing system, fixing issues can still be complicated. It is best to hire a professional plumber, this will lower the risk of damage to your plumbing system and your home.
