To remain comfortable throughout the year, you need to maintain the AC. Bringing in HVAC technicians annually to correct any issues and clean out ducts is something valuable you should do. However, there are other general air conditioner maintenance tips you can perform on your own as well.
Clean Around Your AC
Make sure to clean around your AC. Over the year, grass and other vegetation can grow around it. This may clog up internal elements and reduce air flow. It is a simple task you can perform on your own to boost performance.
Swap Out the Filter
This is another easy air conditioner maintenance tip far too many people neglect to do. Switching out your filter at least every three months keeps the HVAC system running at full capacity. While living in Oklahoma, you may want to replace the filter more frequently due to the amount of dirt and dust in the air.
Clean Out the Fins
The grating around the external AC unit can easily collect dirt and debris. However, this is too small for you to pull out with your hands. It is best to clean it from the inside out, so you do not push the debris into the unit. To gain access, lift the top fan out of the unit (it is held down by two or four screws), then use a garden hose to spray from the inside of the unit out. This pushes debris out of the fins and improves airflow. Before starting, make sure to shut off the power to your HVAC through the circuit breaker to prevent the fan from kicking on. If you do not feel comfortable performing this cleaning, reach out to a professional HVAC company like us, for all your maintenance needs.
Evaporator Drain
The evaporator drain becomes clogged and dirty, reducing the efficiency of your AC. To clean this out, you can use a wet/dry vac to siphon out all the dirt, mildew and moisture, or let the professionals do it.
