When to Install a New AC and Why You Need a Professional’s Help

AC

Repair or replace? That’s usually the question when you start experiencing AC failures and hearing strange noises from the unit.  There are a few factors to take into consideration before making a decision;

  • How old is the AC?

Energy Star recommends upgrading to an energy efficient AC if your current unit is ten year old or more. And in the HVAC industry, the average lifespan of an AC unit is pegged at 14 years. If your unit is more than 14 years old and currently causing you sleepless nights, it may be wise to replace it.

  • Is there coolant leak?

If your AC needs an additional refrigerant, it means that the AC has a coolant leak. Additional refrigerants cost between $40 and $175 per pound. By the time the whole work is done, it may end up costing you between $550 and $1,000. Moreover, once you get a leak, the compressor will usually go out eventually, which could cost you a further $2,000 or more.

In that case, replacing the unit would be the wiser option.

  • Other factors

If each repair is costing hundreds of dollars and you’re making repairs at least twice a year, then the unit might not be worth fixing. The same applies if your utility bills keep rising. The best solution might be to install a new one.

Do I need a professional AC installer?

YES, you do. Here is why;

  • Picking the right AC size

Air conditioners come in a wide range of sizes and the installation usually begins with picking the right size for your home, something not many non-professionals can do.

  • Setting the airflow right

Setting the unit to generate the right airflow is the other main challenge. Even minor, unnoticeable blockages within the system can result in airflow problems in the future. A professional AC installer would be in a better position to set the system right.

  • Stay safe

Above all, installing an AC unit can be dangerous. Calling in an experienced AC expert to do it for you ensures that you stay safe.
