REPAIR VS. REPLACEMENT
Even a well-maintained air conditioner needs to be replaced periodically, but how can you tell when it’s time?
- Your air conditioner is over a decade old. Energy Star recommends upgrading your HVAC if you’ve had it for ten years or more. Some newer units can help you save up to 20% on your electric bill, so even if repairs are cheap, replacement may be cheaper.
- Your A/C needs frequent or expensive repairs. If you’re constantly repairing your unit, it may be wise to replace it with a more reliable, central A/C system. This can be a significant investment, but it may save you money (and frustration) over time. Financial experts endorse the 50% rule: Replace your A/C if the repair cost is greater than or equal to half the cost of a new unit. A/C technicians favor multiplying your unit’s cost of repairs by its age. If this number is greater than or equal to the cost of a new A/C, it’s time to pull the trigger.
- Your A/C uses R-22, an ozone-depleting refrigerant. The EPA recently mandated phasing out its production by 2020, so if your A/C requires R-22, replenishing it will become expensive. If it already requires repairs, it may be cheapest to upgrade.
